S.M.A.R.T. Dating: Strategic

 By Nina Atwood

S is for Strategic, meaning that you look at the big picture of your life. Focus on what you want in the long run and do today what will most likely get you where you want to be. Enjoy the present moment but don’t make the mistake of focusing only on momentary pleasure. If it feels good today but is not in alignment with the “big picture,” learn to say “no, thanks” and “next!”

Ashley and Brianna are friends, but their intentions couldn’t be more different. Ashley is crystal clear that what she wants is a soul mate she can marry and spend her life with: someone compatible and loving. When she goes out with guys, she “interviews” them to get a picture of how emotionally available they are. She’s not hesitant to express her desire for commitment and marriage, yet her lack of desperation allows her to pull that off without scaring the right kind of guys away. Ashley dates strategically, and she’s confidant that she will get results.

Brianna has no plan for her life. She hangs out and hooks up with hot guys, with no thought for the future. She has tons of fun in the moment. The problem is that after a couple of intense passionate weeks, that “moment” arrives. She’s lying in bed with him on Sunday morning, hoping to spend the day together like a “real couple” while he’s thinking of ways to get her to leave so he can go hang out with his buddies and watch the game. It hits her in the stomach: he’s not that into her! Once again, she gave a guy everything and got nothing but a very temporary “good time” in return. By Friday, she’s out with her friends complaining about how badly she feels treated.
